June 26, 2011 email
Hi everyone:
We have our P-day on Fridays...and we were definitely ready for our first one. I guess we'll eventually feel settled enough that the weeks will fly by...but I'm sure we'll always enjoy Fridays! We were picked up at 8:00 am by Elder and Sister Watts (from Centerville, Hollingshead's stake!....in fact they said they were here because of Pres. Hollingshead...they've served a mission in Sweden, and now they're here...Bud encouraged the seniors in their stake to be serving...apparently his challenge worked! Anyway, they've only been here about a month, and they knew the way to Cantril, Iowa and the surrounding Amish countryside. We had to go there to buy Steve's hats (a black felt one and a straw one, both with wide brims) for the two shows. We really enjoyed the the area...went to a couple of Amish stores (one attached to a farmhouse out in a remote area...no power on....the cute little children peeking around the corner of the barn, then running away when they saw us wave. The followed their aunt into the store and watched us carefully, but wouldn't speak (they're probably not allowed to). We went to a dairy (Meek's Creamery) and bought some wonderful cheese (it won awards in Europe) and some great squeaky cheese curd. Jon, maybe you'd like to work there...they had 6 or so flavors of cheese curd that we sampled...heavenly...what can I say?
We then went to Bonaparte, where some of the saints stayed after they left Nauvoo. We ate at the Bonaparte Retreat, an old Grist Mill made into a restaurant with good country cookin! We visited a woolen mill that was also built by the same family (some of the saints that settled there). It's now an antique store...and sold wonderful fudge! When we got back we did laundry, house cleaning, mowing, etc. then went to Keokuk for groceries. That evening we attended a concert by Vocal Point, an amazing acapella group from BYU. It was fun to sit there, watching the fireflies, enjoying the cool breeze. We still can't get over what a beautiful place this is....and the spirit that is here.
Saturday morning we met at the Seventies Hall on Parley St. at 7:30 am, and went down the Trail of Hope, stopping along the way to hear the vignettes done by the Core Cast that are here for Nauvoo Pageant. Wow...that's all I can say...what a spiritual experience that was. Of course we saw many friends along the way....lots of people we knew from "Savior of the World" cast. Jon, Tiara was wonderful as Jane Manning James, and Adrienne was Mary Ann Young. Paul Cartwright wasn't there that morning, but we saw him last evening when we walked over to the Pageant rehearsal. They all wish more than anything that you were here doing this too!
Yesterday I afternoon I was back at the Lyon Drug and Steve was at the Boot Shop. I love that we get to rotate everyday to different sites. Lots to learn, but we love it all. This afternoon (Sunday) we have a private rehearsal with the show people, to get us ready to start both of our shows, "Rendevous at Old Nauvoo" and "Sunset on the Mississippi". We feel pretty comfortable with the songs, but need to learn staging, etc. Our love to you all. Hope to speak to some of you tonight!! Love McGrandma
