Hello again from the MTC!
Yes, again we say wow….what a wonderful experience this has been. Tonight at dinner, as we were saying goodbye to some of the missionaries and couples we probably won’t see again, I was a little saddened to think that this time is over. Fortunately we will go to serve in a place full of missionaries that we can continue to associate with and learn from and share with.
I need to back up and tell about the rest of last week (apologies to those we may have talked to on the phone or seen). Friday we finished up our “basic training” as far as teaching is concerned. We had a wonderful testimony mtg. as we concluded, and took pictures with the great young men who had been our teachers. One of the leaders came into our hall and asked if anyone would be willing to play the part of a bishop in a little play that the teachers put on for the outgoing missionaries, showing how they will work with the local leaders, whether with investigators or less actives. Yes, of course HE volunteered…a chance to be on stage? Love to!!
It was quite the long script that they handed Elder McBride, and then we hurried off to Sheff’s office to fix my chipped tooth and have Steve’s teeth cleaned. We dropped off a load of laundry to Kelly and appreciate her taking good care of it….we thought we would have time to go back and finish it ourselves, but we had to head straight back to be to the MTC in time for the run through for the play. Steve did a great job, and amazed all those young elders with how good he was, only having gone through the script once before the show. We had a late dinner at CafĂ© Rio…our Fri. night date.
Saturday morning we had breakfast and headed up the hill for a session in the Provo Temple. We hadn’t been there for more than 25 years, so it was great to visit there again. Then we had to go get the left rear signal fixed on the car. We weren’t sure where to go, but decided to pull into the Honda dealership (with our Ford). At first the man told us that they wouldn’t have a bulb to fit our car….then he said wait, let me check. No, sorry we don’t have one….oh wait….let me check one other thing. He came back and said yes we do have one. Not long ago a man came in needing that particular bulb. We ordered it in , and it came with two in the package, so he had paid for both, so they didn’t charge us anything. Do you think we were guided to the right place? We had a good visit Saturday afternoon at Matt’s home and Kelly’s home…it was our P day and we had to pick up our laundry, so it worked out great!
Sunday we had Sacrament mtg. at 8:00, so an early breakfast first. We couldn’t remember which room we were assigned to, and when we saw Elder Stock (who watches over the senior couples) we asked him if he knew where we should go. He invited us down the hall to the international branch, where everyone was just learning English. As we sang the opening song “Come Unto Jesus”, we got the the part in the last first that says “….from every land and isle of the sea”…we both got emotional and couldn’t finish singing. The missionaries radiated the light of the gospel…when a small choir stood to sing, we again felt emotional. I loved hearing the elders say the sacramental prayers, and the wonderful talks that they gave. Again, we were in the right place at the right time, and experienced another tender mercy that strengthened our testimonies of this work. We then watched the tabernacle broadcast. In relief society, we hear from Sis. Ann Dibb, in the YW general presidency (Pres. Monson’s daughter). She was delightful…and at the end of her message, she shared pictures and video clips about her father, and some cherished memories of her Dad. She was quite emotional. It was so personal and sweet. We had lunch, went back to our room and rested, then had a video chat with our favorite Texans. We promise them we will have a better set up next week, and hopefully know what we’re doing!! That evening we attended a devotional for all outgoing missionaries. Then went to the large auditorium where at least 2,000 missionaries met for a fireside. The speaker was Elder Heaton who is the administrative director of the MTC. A powerful speaker, he was so easy to listen to, and he spent most of the evening helping missionaries know how to teach the law of chastity. Again, wow!
Today we started our day and a half training in what we will be doing at the historic sites and visitor centers. Tomorrow we have to do our planned presentation for other missionary couples, then they’ll practice on us. We’re supposed to be done at noon, eat lunch, then be on our way! I know this has been way to long of an email to sit down and read, but we just have to share it all…maybe it won’t be this much when we settle into a regular routine.! We love you all so much, and pray the Lord’s blessings to continue with you! To our Utah kids…we’ll hug you tomorrow!! Mom and Dad
