June 18, 2011 email

Hello, from the City of Joseph! Well, the past 24 hours have great! We met the Mission Pres. yesterday morning at 10:00. Pres. Ludwig and his wife having been serving here for almost 4 years. We had a good visit with him, met his counselors and the wonderful Sis. Walker, his secretary. He asked about our family, etc. Then he asked what our assignment was. The NRI? What is your assignment? "We don't know" what are your skills? Uhh.............. He called the NRI office to see if they had us down for any specific assignment...no? OK, then we'll have them work at the sites! (yeay!!).

We were taken on a brief riding tour through the town (we already knew where most of the sites were from the night before). We went to the NRI office, paid our rent and deposits, went to the sewing room and made an appointment for our fittings/measurings, drove past our home (a trailer...but a large one...as you know, we were worried about getting a trailer instead of a home, but this is actually bigger and nicer than most of the homes).

We were told to try the tenderloin sandwich at Grandpa John's (wow!), in the little downtown part of Nauvoo, up on the bluffs (that's where our home is, which apparently is not as muggy and hot as down on the flats). After lunch, we moved in...it had been raining...they had just cut our lawns before we drove up. We have a beautiful two car garage with openers, and all the tools we need....it looks quite new. The house has a wonderful wooden deck on the east side of the home, for all those evenings we want to sit outside (?)...in our spare time...in the heat...

We have two bedrooms, two bathrooms...one with a big jacuzzi ....laundry room, nice size kitchen, then a step down into a large (well, large for a trailer) livingroom with a bay window. We're decorated in lovely rose/and gray/blue...even the big tub is rosy rose! Apparently, as we've talked to several missionaries, we've got it good! Lots of people would love to have our place. At first we thought it would be fun to be down on the flats, in the period homes, and homes built to look period....but we're feeling happier by the hour....as we hear of cars being frozen shut in the winter, etc. Our air conditioning is great...we have double windows...we'll hope the heater is just as great! We're pretty much settled. We still have office stuff to organize...we get the internet on Monday. Then we'll forward some pictures!

We had fun at the sewing room...I'm so grateful that they said they'd finish the other dress! They also let me pick out some fabric for my stage dress. We had to buy our caps, and Steve's tie.

Last night, instead of going to one of the shows (which we should have), we went to the Visitor's Center to listen to Susan Easton Black speak. You're probably familiar with her writings (church historian, BYU professor, etc.) She's amazing...they have been here in Nauvoo (her favorite place on earth) for a couple of weeks, and this was her 6th time to speak to the missionaries...each time on a different subject.

I forgot to mention that during the afternoon, as we were driving back to our home, we saw a small fox trotting up the street. The missionaries said they had been watching him off and on the past several days. Then when we arrived home, we saw our first fireflies! They made me so happy! But that really would have been enough critters for the day. Late in the evening, as Steve was putting some things away in HIS bathroom, I could hear him laughing. I finally went to see what was going on. He said there had been a frog in the toilet, but that he swam away...yes...I had my fit...I told him to flush! And then of course I couldn't make myself use the bathroom....you would have laughed at me in the middle of the night, standing in my bathroom, not being able to sit down....I know they don't bite....I know they're just helpless little creatures...but it freaked me out! Faith, not fear....faith, not fear...None of the other missionaries this morning said that they had experienced that !

OK...I know this is way too long...but for now this is my journal too! This morning we went to our Preparation mtg. which we will attend everyday except P-day (which will be on Fridays) and Sundays. Our group meets in the Cultural Hall.. they were all so friendly....we're excited! We just saw our schedule for this week. Monday is orientation most of the day. Then we have a day at the Family Living Center (candle making, spinning, baking bread for me, and barrel-making, rope-making for Steve), The rest of the week, Steve will be at the Boot shop and I will be at Lyon's Drug. Pretty cool, huh! We have a notebook full of all the scripts for these places... so lots of studying this weekend. I'll stop for now...remember how much we love you! DARC
